Splendid colouration of the peacock spider

Male peacock spiders of the genus Maratus, members of the jumping spider family, are exquisitely coloured, due to a rich pattern featuring white, blue, cream and red scales covering the body.

We have in detail characterised the optical properties of Maratus splendens by advanced optical and anatomical techniques.

The various scales derive their colour from different pigments except for the blue scales, which are unpigmented and have a structural colour, created by an intricate, complex photonic system.

The striking, colourful pattern of the male spider allows the spider to effectively charm attentive females.
