Student success story: Roya Rudd

Roya Rudd

April 2016’s Student Success Story puts a spotlight on the talented Roya Rudd – a PhD student at the Future Industries Institute with the University of South Australia.

Roya is focusing her research energies on the engineering optical properties of nanocomposite coatings. Read her interview to find out how she manages the busy workload of being an Excellerate PhD student.

What 3 secrets of success can you share with aspiring students?

First of all, enjoy your PhD, don’t endure it! Revel in the fact that you are doing something that nobody else has done before.

Second, manage your time and prioritise your tasks effectively; as a PhD student you will have a busy workload, so set manageable goals and work towards them to avoid last minute stress and missed deadlines.

Last but not least, there is no success without perseverance and tenacity. Completing a PhD comes with a unique set of challenges, so it’s crucial to persevere, be tenacious and remain focused on your PhD goals and outcomes.

What was your highlight from being part of the Excellerate Student program?

My best highlight was being selected as a finalist for the CRC Association’s Early Career Researcher Showcase and representing Excellerate at the CRC Association’s Business of Innovation Conference 2016.

Aside from showcasing my research and receiving valuable feedback, it was an honour to represent Excellerate and a great opportunity to meet professionals from government and industry.

My second highlight was being selected and sponsored by the Society of Vacuum Coaters (SVC) to attend the 2016 Technical Conference in USA to present my research.

And last but not least, another highlight has been working on one of Excellerate’s largest research projects – the Next Generation Automotive Coatings project. I have really enjoyed working on the fundamental aspects of a project which has an industrial application with benefits to society.

What do you hope to achieve in 5 years?

My ultimate goal is to combine my industrial experience with my research experience to create impact through innovation to address industrial needs and society challenges.
